Mental toll of detention without sanitary products in Mauritius

Rapings in Mauritius Monster Prisons

Rape incidents in Mauritian Prisons have seen a significant rise in recent times, primarily involving same-sex assaults, mostly perpetrated by prison guards against prisoners. This abuse of power is rampant, with prisoners who lack financial resources often coerced into unwanted sexual acts, tantamount to rape.

The system in Mauritius is plagued by corruption and misuse of authority, with instances of bribery and sexual favors leading to special privileges for inmates, such as extended phone calls, better food, and preferential treatment. Beau Basin and Melrose prisons are particularly notorious for such misconduct. Unfortunately, the authorities, including the police and judiciary, either turn a blind eye or are complicit in the corrupt practices due to their involvement in the system.

Human Rights mentally abused

The root of this issue lies in the abysmally low salaries of law enforcement and prison officials, creating fertile ground for corruption to flourish. The entire population is effectively at the mercy of law enforcement and the judiciary, with the right to a fair trial often disregarded.

Despite numerous reports of these atrocities, Mauritius has managed to evade scrutiny from international organizations like the United Nations and Amnesty International. The country's reliance on funding from the European Commission, coupled with restricted civil liberties, paints a grim picture of a nation veering towards dictatorship, with restrictions on dissent and media freedom compounding the human rights violations.

Urgent reforms are imperative, not only within the law enforcement and judicial systems but also in the country's governance structure to address these deep-rooted issues.
