Welcome to the Foreign Prisoners Network! Our organization provides assistance to foreign prisoners in Mauritius who are facing unjust and harsh conditions during long pre-trial detentions without a case being lodged. Currently, there are 75 foreign detainees who have been held for up to 8 years.
The prison system in Mauritius is notorious for its lengthy pre-trial detentions, and the Melrose High-Security Prison, where our prisoners are being held, makes for an even tougher experience.
The Mauritius prison system is known for its significantly long remand times, and the Melrose High-Security Prison where our prisoners are being held presents even greater challenges. Our foreigners have been isolated from the rest of the community and are not provided with a daily program or the opportunity to access education. Worse still, there is no access to basic amenities like toilet paper and warm water. The prison canteen facility provides limited, poor-quality food options with only cheese, butter, and jam available, which cannot be refrigerated and thus can be harmful.
We urgently need to fund lawyers specialized in human rights to help improve the situation of our foreign detainees, considering that Mauritius has signed numerous international agreements promoting and protecting human rights. We are fundraising to support hiring specialized lawyers for human rights to help appeal for the release and ensure fair trial for our foreign detainees. Mauritius has signed several international human rights agreements and treaties, making it imperative that we improve this situation and raise awareness.
