Mental and Physical Abused prisoners are victims of an prehistoric punishment before sentence!
With 100 individuals confined in an enclosure enclosed by towering concrete walls, the conditions at Beau Bassin Prison in Mauritius are grim. The facility provides little to no privacy, as the open toilets and icy showers offer no respite.
Inmates are relegated to sitting on hard concrete benches all day, devoid of any meaningful activities. The nutritional offerings are abysmal, compounded by the lack of basic hygiene supplies such as toilet paper.
Consequently, prisoners are left with no choice but to clean themselves using their bare hands after using the facilities, leading to concerning levels of cross-contamination and health risks.
The failure of the Mauritius Prison System to provide such a basic necessity as toilet paper in 2024 is a clear violation of the International Human Rights standards outlined in various agreements ratified by the Mauritian government.
It is disheartening to witness Mauritius turning a blind eye to these obligations, effectively disregarding the very principles it pledged to uphold.
