Is the Anti Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) in Mauritius abuses its power against citizens?

Updated: Aug 15

In Mauritius, a widely acknowledged but profoundly serious issue persists. The Anti Drugs and Smuggling Unit of the Mauritius Police Force (ADSU) subjects citizens to a climate of fear, with the constant threat of the ADSU planting drugs in a residence and subsequently arresting the occupant.

These fabricated charges and unjust arrests may be publicized in the newspapers, despite being entirely unfounded. This distressing reality unfolds daily on the island of Mauritius, leading to severe consequences. Individuals face job loss, children yearn for their absent fathers, families are evicted from their homes, compelled to seek refuge with relatives as their loved ones are taken to harsh detention facilities.

Life within these prisons entails unsanitary conditions, lacking basic amenities like toilet paper, plagued by open toilets, infestations, limited activities, isolation from the outside world, and substandard food.

These injustices, knowingly orchestrated to bolster the reputation of involved police officers under the guise of successful outcomes, represent a grave scandal. It is dismaying that the government and regulatory bodies seemingly view this exploitative practice as a lucrative revenue stream.
