Dark side of Restaurants in Mauritius by dealing and distributing harddrugs

Updated: Aug 15

During challenging times, people show their ingenuity by ensuring their businesses continue to operate. This creativity is evident in the Mauritian catering industry as well. Initially, some chefs contemplated keeping their restaurants closed during the lockdown. However, they have now transitioned to providing take-away services, which have proven to be successful. This shift demonstrates adaptability and resourcefulness.

In Mauritius, where the drug trade is expanding rapidly, certain regions like Grand Baie and Tamarin - Black River pose significant risks. Catering entrepreneurs in this area often rely on smugglers from Reunion Island to obtain drugs. These illicit substances are then distributed through local restaurants in Black River using couriers and street vendors. Restaurant owners profit from an extra high income and combine this with cash incoming money in their restaurantas to launder the profits earned illegally from drugs import and street trading. Due to inadequate government oversight, legitimate-looking restaurants are increasingly being used as fronts for organized crime.

With strict monitoring of non-essential movements, criminals in the catering industry are exploring new ways to traffic drugs. Reports from Interpol indicate that drug dealers are attempting to use food delivery services as a cover for their illegal activities in various countries, including Mauritius. Recent arrests in the UK, Ireland, Spain, and Malaysia underscore the severity of this issue. Instances of drug smuggling disguised as food deliveries have been uncovered, exposing the lengths to which criminals will go to evade detection.

These deceptive couriers, often unknowingly complicit in criminal activities, play a key role in this illicit network. While some are unwittingly involved, others actively engage in drug distribution to earn substantial profits. These fraudulent couriers bypass regular checks and instead focus on delivering drugs concealed within their delivery bags.

Interpol has issued warnings to all its member countries to be vigilant regarding food courier services. The evolving tactics of drug traffickers underscore the importance of continued surveillance and enforcement to combat illegal activities in the food delivery sector.
